 Cold patch is very easy to install with a shovel and square hand tamper. Cold patch is used primarily as a temporary repair until professional repairs can be completed or until budget money becomes available.

This process is typically used for alligator cracked pavement which requires full depth replacement. Saw cut and removal is performed, it is replaced with new hot-mix asphalt and compacted with a vibratory roller. Upon completion, the saw-cut joint is sealed with a hot-rubberized crack sealant to prevent water infiltration. 

Infrared asphalt restoration is a “green” alternative to removal and replacement. An infrared heater is positioned over the pothole, the area is heated to 400 degrees, fresh asphalt is then installed to supplement the repair, a rejuvenator is also applied to the older asphalt and finally it is compacted with a vibratory roller. This repair process is ideal for the fact it can be completed 24 hrs a day / 7 days a week. It is independent of the asphalt plant schedule due to the fact the asphalt can remain heated in the hot box. This is the most cost-effective repair available, as it down improve the quality of your asphalt parking lot long-term.

Skin Patching, sometimes referred to as surface patching is a temporary repair which will outlast cold patch but is not as effective or a long term solutions as saw cut and removal or infrared restoration. Skin Patching is typically used when emergency repairs need to be made in high traffic areas where cold patch will be eroded from constant traffic or pedestrian traffic needs a solid surface to walk on or drive a cart over. Typically skin patching is used prior to a parking lot being milled and paved or resurfaced. For example, the parking lot has a large number of potholes in February and the parking lot is budgeted to be milled and paved in May. Cold patch is not going to last until May as the winter is still in full swing and more snow storms are predicted. You would use hot asphalt to fill the holes and compact it with an objective of feathering the edges as close as possible. Skin Patching can sometimes be used for semi-permanent repairs to stretch more expensive cut out patching or milling & paving for 1-2 years, however, the skin patches are susceptible to damage from snow plow blades.

When people think of asphalt, they think of the roads that you drive on. Some (like us) even think about the roads that are driven on by racecars. This week, our asphalt driveway resurfacing company decided to think outside the box and talk about our favorite racetracks around the world. Have you been to any of these? Which are your favorite racetracks?

This racetrack is nestled in the rich green fields of Anglesey’s west coast in Wales. It overlooks the Irish Sea and the Snowdonia mountain range and boasts a new shape that was redesigned in 2006. Because if its twists and turns, it’s one of the more difficult racetracks on our list.

One of the most famous racetracks in the world, Nurburgring is laid around the village of Nurburg, Germany. Today, it’s split into two parts (the Nordschleife and the Sudschleife). The Nordschleife boasts over 1,000 feet of elevation changes and is considered to be the most difficult racetrack in the world.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec is the former home of Canada’s Formula 1 Grand Prix race. The track sits on a man-made island (which was created for the track’s purpose) and the waterfront views are beautiful from the asphalt.

Head to Victoria, Australia and you’ll find the racetrack that’s home to the country’s Grand Prix. It sits on the south end of the 39 square-foot island and borders the beautiful waters of the the Bass Strait (the strait between Australia and Tasmania).

Talk about a racetrack with a view! This tricky track in the San Luis Province of Argentina is a very unique place to race – it’s built around an extinct volcano. While drivers make their laps, they can enjoy the view of the reservoir along with the views of the Sierras de Córdoba mountain range.

Ever wonder why water doesn’t seem to collect on a flat road? Or in a parking lot? Or on a driveway? Standing water can be a damaging element to paved surfaces, so it’s very important to choose a paving company that understands drainage and why it’s a necessity.

This allows water to flow off of the pavement and into an area of lower elevation. Sloping is a necessary step for keeping your pavement strong and beautiful.

Sloping is why you don’t see water puddling up on the roads you drive or collecting in the middle of the parking lot you frequent. And while standing water is a hazard to pavement, it can also be a hazard to cars and pedestrians, so if you own a business with a parking lot, make sure your pavement is accurately sloped.
